(February 28, 2024) BERNARDS, NJ – Earlier this month, Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07) met with veteran U.S. Army Private Robert Shaw III and his new care team as he moved into an accessible apartment in the Valley Brook Village Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) community on the campus of Lyons VA Medical Center.

Mr. Shaw suffered a horrific accident during a routine medical procedure in 2021, which resulted in the amputation of both of his legs above the knee. As a result of the terrible accident, Mr. Shaw’s life was thrown into chaos. He lost his apartment and was moved from facility to facility for years.

“Mr. Shaw’s story of resilience and hope is inspiring,” said Congressman Kean. “No American hero who bravely served our country should have to endure what he did. Securing permanent housing together with the VA, HUD, NJ DHS, and other partners is important so we can give this veteran a place to call home.”

"It's so great to be home. Thank you to all the people who made this happen,” said Mr. Shaw. “Thank you to my Congressman and his incredible staff. I know I will need a lifetime of help and support, please don't forget about me."

Mr. Shaw sought help from Congressman Kean’s District Office after years of struggling through red tape and medical rehab.

“Mr. Shaw endured both physical and mental torment, which is inexcusable,” added Congressman Kean. "While I have heard from many veterans with very positive experiences with the VA, any case where the VA falls short is one too many. I implore veterans, their families, and their friends to reach out my office for assistance at any time, for any reason.”

Team Kean is always here to help. If you or someone you know needs help with the VA or any other federal agency, please do not hesitate to contact the office. You can find more information here: https://kean.house.gov/services/help-federal-agency or call (908) 547-3307.
